How not to kill your house plants when you take a vacation

It's not easy to keep your house plants alive when you are away on vacation especially during the summer. There are lots of suggestions from asking friends to drop by every other day to setting up elaborate watering systems or placing your plants in the bathtub. All of these can be problematic especially with overwatering causing your plants to drown.

Overwatering is the most common way of causing house plants to die as the water saturates the soil and displaces air. Many people do not realise that air in the growing medium is essential for roots to survive. Without air, plants will die. On the other hand, too little water will cause plants to die of thirst. It’s not easy to find the correct balance, but Rinnal will help.

The spongy structure of Rinnal ensures that it holds up to 40% of its volume in air. At the same time, unlike other growing media that gradually drain dry, Rinnal holds water like a sponge keeping it available for the roots. The unique air holding capabilities of Rinnal ensures that your plants will not drown from overwatering. Tests have shown that it is possible to grow plants in 100% Rinnal blocks sitting in pots full of water. However, for general house plants we recommend growing in soil mix with at least 30% to 50% Rinnal.
